Backpackers Stranded By Storm in Red's Meadow

The wet and wild storm that blew through the Eastern Sierra last week, unexpectedly opened the ski area for a few days, but helicopteralso ended up stranding two backpackers in the local mountains.

Mono Sheriff Officials report that the Search and Rescue Team was called out on Friday October 16, for a report of two backpackers stranded in Red’s Meadow. The two men from Louis, California, 36-year-old Kevin Garbi and 46-year-old Randall Dennis, had started their trip at Lake Mary but had been stuck  when the storm hit.

With soaked boots and camping gear, the two made it to Red’s Meadow where they used the pay phone at the Red’s Meadow Pack Station to call 911 on Friday. Sheriff officials say that the road to Red’s Meadow wasn’t in good condition to drive or snowmobile, so the two cold but uninjured men were picked up by CHP helicopter and flown out.

Hopefully that is one expensive taxi ride. If they're only hiking from Lake Mary and they weren't ready from snow...they didn't check the forecast!!!

Commentators...Quite frankly, until you walk in their shoes, you can't really say some of the things you are saying...Don't know the specifics of what happened here, but if they were out overnight, cold and wet,in high altitude, maybe close to hypothermia, and apparently a hike still ahead of them on a road in bad condition,it is probably better safe than sorry to air-lift them out,if road conditions prevented driving in to get them....or to be telling them to walk out on their own.A short walk is a long walk if you are cold, and wet in freezing weather.

They should have been prepared. Early winter storms are not unusual.
Who cares about the specifics as long as they're not bragging about their outdoor skills.

Bob....agreed,they should have been prepared for one of these early snowstorms....but apparently, they were not. When the call went out to Mono SAR to get involved, the decision was made to air-lift them out of the mess they had gotten into.Should they have told them " too bad,get yourself out on your own"?...or ignored the 911 call asking for assistance? That is not what SAR,911,and public officials are supposed to do when a call comes in.Whenever someone gets stranded,or lost, people can always blame the victim for mistakes they made to end up in the situation they got into. And it usually seems to be a mistake they made...But the answer is still help out if you can.Not blame them...and ignore. Is it???..
