Marijuana Grow Arrests In Mammoth

While the situation surrounding medical marijuana appears to be relaxing, it is still possible to be arrested for marijuana related crimes here in the Eastern Sierra.

mono_sheriffThe State of California may be moving toward full legalization of marijuana if a proposition makes the ballot in November, and Mammoth Lakes residents may choose to allow medical marijuana co-ops in June, but even with the lax laws that are currently on the books, Mono Narcotic Agents still plan to target illegal sales of marijuana.

On January 28th, Mono Narcotic Officers arrested a Mammoth resident who possessed a medical marijuana recommendation for sales and growing marijuana in his bedroom.

After an investigation that stretched over three months, officers served two search warrants in two separate homes in Mammoth. In one of the homes, officer say they found a bedroom that had been converted to a hydroponic grow room containing 40 mature marijuana plants. Agents also say they seized just less than one pound of dried marijuana and $900 in currency.

Despite having a medical marijuana recommendation, officers arrested 20-year-old Andrew Ayala for multiple counts of marijuana sales, and cultivation. During the second search warrant, 19-year-old Mammoth resident Fernando Leo was arrested for sales of marijuana, according to officers.

With laws that make it relatively easy to get a medical marijuana recommendation, MONET agents say that they do target people who misuse the “medical marijuana defense in order to profit from the illegal cultivation and sales of marijuana.”

Officers say that the Mammoth Fire Department and building inspector were called in as well, due to the “modified, unsafe, out of code electrical work and mold spores growing on the walls and floor throughout the room.” This type of hazard is common with indoor grows, officers say, adding that these homes, “ are typically rentals in which the property owner must pay thousands of dollars in clean up.” The second home raided last week has been found to be uninhabitable and was sealed for no entry, according to officers.

I wonder what medical "condition" these 19 and 20 year olds have in order to require the use of marijuana...what a PERFECT example of how this med marijuana issue in California turned out,and who it benefits...in most cases....the dealers, living in dumps, growing, and selling..and thinking the law can't do nothing about it......SURPRISE!!!!

What's disappointing is that county, State, and Federal resources are being wasted on "fighting" the cultivation and use of a plant that has been on the earth LONG before man ever walked on two legs. I'm sure that Mono County won't be able to prosecute these individuals because all their "ducks" appear to be in a row and the California State Supreme Court just ruled 2 weeks ago that the State can't limit the number of plants an individual can have or carry on their person. MONET stop wasting money.

I agree with you Wayne. This is a perfect example of what's to come with these medicinal marijuana recommendations. Legalizing marijuana is absolutely the wrong thing to do. I strongly believe marijuana is the most profound gateway drug and leads to more serious components of drug addiction. Already marijuana has negatively impacted these two individuals young lives. Yet, does anyone ask what serious illness did they have to warrant the need for a medicinal marijuana card at their age or why they were abusing their card to sell to others. As with many, the marijuana card is just an excuse to get high and make money. Always the dollar, always the dollar.

In regards to David Shadle's comment, these guys were arrested for "selling" marijuna. Where does that fit in with any law for medical marijuana use? I would say that they did not have all of their "ducks" in a row. This wasn't about them being over on any plant limits. It's about them selling marijuana and taking advantage of their medical card.

Goodness! You people are all old fuddy duddies who probably have never smoked pot for any reason. Think of the large tax dollars the counties could benefit from... Do you think something like DWP's solar plan will bring in nearly as much as California's #1 cash crop, I think not! Think about all the prison cells it could clear up for the real criminals. Next time you wake up with a hangover from a long drinking binge just remember marijuana is LESS harmful than aspirin. NO ONE has ever died from it. Can you alcoholics say that about your drug of choice? Say what you want about people trying to use medical marijuana but, Californian's vote for Marijuana Legalization is headed for the voter ballet in November(http://www.taxcannabis.org/). Hopefully it will pass and it looks like it will. Then the local narcotics office will have to start busting the meth heads and crack dealers, and leave the happy hippies alone, like they should of done all along. It is time for all the baby boomers to retire and let generation X take over! ( I know half over half of the comments are law abiding but I bet you'll be standing in line for a green handful when it is legal!

I think alcohol is the gateway drug with much worse collateral damage. Every time I drink there is cash involved, so I guess it's a matter of who's making the money. The best thing about pot smokers is that they are usually happy and too sleepy to fight. They are also a windfall for the fast food and snack industry.I just don't think that marijuana causes the trouble that alcohol does, bottom line.

hey David Shadle - although I kinda agree with your post, their ducks might be in a legal row, they crossed the line when they were selling.

We'll see how it plays out but I believe the DA could and very well might get a conviction for sales. What pisses me off is the money they make is tax free. Wish I had a business that could be run that way.
